Feel a punch in the gut with a great subwoofer

A subwoofer that tickles you in all the right places helps create a complete sound picture. You should be able to hear the big explosions and see Bruce Willis walking away with his back turned, and the deep bass frequencies in the music. Whether you’re playing back from your computer, TV or your studio setup.

Most often, a subwoofer comes as a square box and is placed under the desk in the studio, or in the corner of the living room or bedroom. A subwoofer comes in many different sizes and can therefore be easily adapted to how you want to arrange your space with it.

You hardly ever get a passive subwoofer anymore, but they do exist. That means you’ll get them as active units, which means they have a built-in amplifier. This gives you a big advantage, because those deep frequencies can otherwise be a challenge. That way, you’ll also be extra happy about the extra punch in the gut you get from the subwoofer.

Is a subwoofer necessary for you? That’s of course an individual decision, but if you’re a huge sound experience nerd, then the answer is guaranteed “yes”. If you often sit and watch the latest action movies and watch live concerts from your sofa, then a subwoofer really helps lift the whole experience to another level.

If you have smaller speakers that don’t support deep frequencies very well, a subwoofer is also a quick fix for a much better experience. If, on the other hand, you already have a set of good, large floor-standing speakers, you might be able to do without a subwoofer at first.

Experiment with your subwoofer

Technically, the human ear is not able to determine the direction of deep tones, which are what the subwoofer brings into the world. Fortunately, this gives you a lot of freedom when it comes to placing your subwoofer. A subwoofer plays roughly the same amount of power in all directions. That’s also a big advantage with your boyfriend or husband!

When the tones from the subwoofer hit any surface, those tones are reflected back into the room - in a straight direction. This means that the deep tones become extra strong if it is placed up against a wall. If it becomes too much, you can usefully move the subwoofer a little away from the wall.
