The Popular Duct Tape

On stage and for installations, duct tape has become indispensable. This is due to its strong adhesive power for fastening, sealing, joining, and securing. The fact that gaffa tape can still be easily torn by hand without tools makes it very practical for many to work with. The tape is incredibly strong and adheres well to almost all surfaces. Good duct tape has removable adhesive on the back, so it can easily be removed from floors, stages, etc., without leaving adhesive residue.

What colors can you get duct tape in?

Duct tape is available in colors that can generally be divided into three categories. One is anonymous and muted colors such as gray, white, and black. Colors that blend in with the stage or equipment, so they are not visible to the audience. The second is attention-grabbing with bright and neon colors, which can be used in festive contexts. The last category is like safety tape, where the colors are patterned in black and yellow or white and røde diagonal stripes.

How strong is duct tape?

The strength of duct tape is measured in adhesive strength. The tape is produced in several strengths, but the company 3M states that the strong tape has a normal adhesive strength of 502 grams per cm width when the tape is applied to a steel surface. Thus, a strip of duct tape with a width of 10 centimeters applied to a steel plate will not begin to loosen until you pull on it with a load of more than 5 kilograms.

Duct Tape in Many Colors

Duct tape comes in many different muted colors to ensure that the permanently mounted cable on the stage floor does not stand out. Black duct tape is most often used on stage, and for securing cables to, for example, ventilation pipes, silver-gray duct tape is used so that the installation or tape does not stand out too much. As previously mentioned, black duct tape is the most used, but silver and white tape are also widely used on stages and theaters, etc. Additionally, duct tape is available in both matte and glossy to best fit the surroundings. However, you can also get duct tape in strong neon colors, which are particularly noticeable and provide an extra decorative effect. Finally, we also have striped safety tape that can be used to warn about dangerous areas or to highlight specific areas.

Duct Tape in English

In English, from where the word originates, the tape is called either gaffer tape or duct tape.

As far as is known, the word "gaffa" comes from the English term "gaffer," which is a job title for a stage technician who takes care of cable management, etc., in the entertainment, music, and film industries.

A gaffer would thus use this type of gaffer tape or duct tape to secure the cables to the stage. The tape quickly became known as "gaffer tape," and in the Danish version, it became gaffatape.

The tape is also referred to by terms and names such as elephant tape, canvas tape - perhaps because there is cotton thread in the tape.

The popular Danish music magazine Gaffa dk is, as far as we know, not related to duct tape and has coincidentally chosen the name.
