Snare drums are produced in various types of wood and metal. The most common snare drum types are maple and birch, as well as steel, brass, and aluminum. However, you can also choose more exotic woods like bubinga and walnut.

Most drummers use snare drums in the size 14x5.5" or 14x6.5". 14x5.5" is a versatile size that can be used for many different genres. 14x6.5" has a bit more bottom and is usually better suited for deeper tunings. However, you can also find snare drums in 10", 12", and 13" which are all more genre-specific or used as effect snare drums alongside the standard 14" snare drum.
