Dark Cinematic Resonances from an Abandoned Silo
The Dark Tower is a percussive virtual instrument born from an extraordinary acoustic space—a towering grain silo where multi-layered concrete chambers create natural reverb that no studio can match. This decommissioned industrial monument became our recording environment, whose weathered metal infrastructure and enormous vertical shafts offer a unique sonic palette. To capture The Dark Tower, we ventured into this cavernous silo, where multiple floors resonate up towards the sky, with the cylindrical concrete chamber creating a natural reverb chamber that no studio could reproduce.
But before we could harvest these hidden industrial tones, we had to find the right sources inside the tower itself. Deep within the structure we discovered massive metal plates, interconnected resonance stairways, ventilation ducts and scattered unusual metallic structures—every part of the silo’s skeleton became a new source of percussive sound.
The recording process was equal parts archaeological expedition and musical exploration. The silo’s soaring acoustics meant that every sound travelled through multiple floors of concrete and metal before it was recorded, creating natural delays and reverberations that were impossible to reproduce artificially. Every hit became a conversation between performer and architecture. What emerged was something between industrial percussion and ambient sculpture. The Dark Tower delivers more than percussion—it’s a focused dark acoustic environment built for modern production. Ideal for trailer music composers seeking massive impacts, film composers building tension, and electronic producers pushing industrial boundaries.
Using MNDALA 2, we brought these sounds to life through its sequencer, live effects, and the use of macros on the X, Y, and Z axes. We transformed these sounds into musical sources that are perfectly suited to electronic, industrial, and experimental music. The percussive sounds become synths when we modulate them and shape them with the endless possibilities in MNDALA 2.
The Dark Tower is the first part of our Microfield Recording Series—living instruments that let you step into a place where industry meets artistry, where abandonment sparks creativity. It is an interactive virtual instrument that expands your sonic palette with textures that are rarely available outside their architectural source. What we discovered in the concrete tower surprised us, and we hope it will transform your music too.
