Reflection Filters for Microphones

Reflection Filters for microphones can prevent unwanted noise and other sound elements from being captured in the recording. This can be very necessary if you are recording in places that are not fully soundproofed. Reflection Filters are easy to mount and fit almost all microphone arms or microphone stands. The microphone screen forms a protective semicircle around the microphone, which absorbs or keeps reflective sound out of the recording. This allows the recording or interview to be captured without disruptive background noise.

Reflection Filters Fit Most Microphones

Since the reflection filter or reflection screen is not placed on the microphone but on the arm or stand, they can be used with almost all microphones. The choice of reflection filter largely depends on the environment you will be recording in. Microphone screens are made in different sizes and materials, and what the optimal reflection filter is depends on which sound sources you want to avoid. Additionally, the filters are also differentiated between those that mainly reflect sound and those that are primarily designed to absorb sound. A microphone screen does both, of course, but some products are better at one than the other and vice versa.

What is the Difference Between a Reflection Filter and a "Pop" Filter?

The purpose of both types of filters is to optimize the recording or interview by keeping unwanted sounds out of the recording. Specifically, a reflection filter focuses on keeping external sounds away from the microphone, so you mainly capture the voice of the person singing or speaking. In contrast, with a "pop" filter, the unwanted sounds come from the person themselves. For certain letters, especially "p" and "b," a lot of air is expelled to pronounce them. If the mouth is placed very close to the microphone, this burst of air is captured as disruptive noise. The "pop" filter absorbs the air and thus prevents it from being captured in the recording. A microphone screen is a super practical tool if you are recording acoustic instruments or vocals and do not have access to a professionally soundproofed room. With a microphone screen, you can easily shield where most 'sound pollution' comes from, whether it's reflections from a window or a hard wall.
