What is an interface?

The English word interface means “grænseflade”, but it’s the English term that is most widely used. Without going into too much technical detail, an interface in this context can be described as a kind of adapter that connects two types of electronics so they can communicate and their functions work.

An interface connects, for example, your car’s software to your car radio. It is a set of wires with an adapter, and once installed, it is not visible to the naked eye in your car. Although it is not directly visible, the underlying interface plays a major role in ensuring that the functions in your car work as they should. It is crucial for, for example, your climate control and your steering wheel control of e.g. your car stereo and calls to work optimally. That’s why some people also refer to an interface as a steering wheel control cable.

An ISO connector is closely related to an interface, but an ISO connector is not equipped with the small adapter box itself. ISO connectors are often used in slightly older cars where an interface is not necessary.

What is a mounting frame?

In many newer cars, the car radio is built into a larger or smaller part of the centre console. When you replace your car stereo, it is therefore often also necessary to replace the part around it – namely the mounting frame – with one that is specifically designed for your car model. The mounting frame ensures that your new car radio is properly secured and becomes a natural and integrated part of your car’s interior. That’s why mounting frames are also sometimes called radio frames.
