Ernie Ball 2251 Classic Regular Slinky Pure Nickel is a 6-string electric guitar set for players who want a more rounded, “vintage” sound with less glassy treble. The pure nickel roundwound winding delivers a softer top end and a warmer midrange push, which can be a huge advantage if your guitar or amp tends to sound bright and “zingy”.
The construction is roundwound with pure nickel wrap wire on the wound strings, giving a smoother, more “buttery” feel under the fingers and a slightly more rounded attack. The three plain strings are tin-plated/high-carbon steel (classic electric-guitar standard), so you still get a stable, precise response for bends and vibrato, but with the overall warmer character of a pure nickel set. Note that pure nickel typically sounds darker and offers less snap/cut than brighter nickel-plated steel strings, and the lifespan is generally average compared with coated long-life strings.
The set has Regular Slinky tension and a classic 10–46 gauge that works well for blues, classic rock, and anything from clean to crunch. Gauges are .010–.046 (approx. 0.25–1.17 mm), providing a familiar balance between playability and low-end in the tone. If you rely on maximum brightness and top-end “cut”, you may find them more rounded in the highs; on the other hand, they’re perfect when you want to tame a bright guitar/amp and get a more organic, vintage-leaning voice.
