Ernie Ball 2716 Cobalt Burly Slinky is a 6-string electric guitar set for players who want a more immediate response from their pickups and a tone that cuts through at high gain. The cobalt alloy in the winding reacts more strongly to magnets than traditional nickel-wound strings, so you’ll typically experience higher output, a tighter low end and a more defined, more aggressive attack – perfect for heavy riffs, precise palm mutes and sharp rhythms.

Here you get roundwound strings with a cobalt-alloy winding on a hexagonal steel core, combined with plain treble strings in tin-plated high carbon steel. The result is an open and detailed frequency response with good string separation, even when you stack distortion and compression. The feel is smooth and fast under the fingers, while the set still feels full and “burly”, keeping your picking stable and controlled.

The set is Burly Slinky gauge 11–48 (.011–.048), which offers more resistance than lighter sets and extra stability for down-tuning and heavy picking. The plain strings are approx. 0.028 cm, 0.036 cm and 0.046 cm, and the wound strings go up to approx. 0.122 cm on the low E. Note that they can feel tighter/stiffer than nickel strings of the same gauge, and if you’re switching from a thinner set, a guitar setup (truss rod, action and intonation) may be required. The sound is very clear and bright, so in already bright setups it can come across as sharp. The strings are not coated, but many find they retain that fresh/bright tone longer than standard nickel strings.
