A man cave is the ultimate place to live out your dreams of having a personal space for yourself—somewhere you can feel 100% comfortable. A room where a man can relax and be surrounded by his hobbies, passions and interests.
Of course, that requires that you actually need such a place in your everyday life, and that you have the space to make it happen.
Many people interpret the term “Man Cave” in very different ways. For some, a man cave is a bar in a garage where other guys from the street meet up, have a beer and play a game of darts. For others, it’s a dedicated room in the house, centred around a passion such as gaming, music, guitars or something else entirely.
The most important point is simply that it should make you feel relaxed, comfortable, and like you can be yourself—and ideally without interruptions.
💡 You can get far with lighting
Most designers would agree that the right lighting can transform any room or space from dull and boring into welcoming and cosy. Lighting can create exactly the atmosphere you want in your man cave.
In a basement or generally dark rooms, it’s a good idea to go for soft LED lighting or other soft coloured LED lighting. If the room is dark, the light mustn’t be so harsh that it almost stings your eyes. Instead, go for softer light and generally aim the light downwards or upwards to avoid eye strain.
With coloured light, you can advantageously place e.g. LED strips behind furniture. It will also make your furniture look extra cool and make everything pop. At the same time, for example a sofa or a good chair will look more inviting.

🛠 Shelves for multiple purposes
The idea that shelves are only for storage is something you can throw right out. Shelves can become your best friend—especially if you’re building your man cave in a basement or garage.
For example, build a shelf out of plywood in a shape that can help cover up ugly pipes or similar. With this cover, you can then put up decorations or store things on it. Shelves aren’t just for storage—they can save a room!

🤪 Remember, it’s your man cave!
Don’t be afraid to get personal and weird. When you design your man cave, it’s completely fine to think outside the box. Not everything has to make sense and fit perfectly together—or even look good at all.
The bottom of a car can make a really good desk, and pallets can easily become rustic furniture. Do you want to be able to play loud music, or watch a great action movie at full blast? Then you might need acoustic foam, which can, for example, be assembled in a frame so it becomes a piece of art. Be creative!

🎯 Integrate your passion in style
In the end, your man cave is really all about being exactly the way you want it. It should feel like an extension of who you are.
Put up on the walls whatever means something to you. Posters and memorabilia from your sports heroes, favourite films or albums are always a great start. Comics and computer games can also be a way to show your passion.
It might get a bit “tacky”, but it’s important that you don’t care about other people’s opinion of the room—it’s yours!
Remember even small things like a Hawaii Ukulele on the wall next to a surfboard create atmosphere and cosiness
🔊 Cables or not?
Are you into cables, or not into cables? Most people would say cables are ugly and only a hassle. However, there are also a handful of us who love cables and regular speakers. There’s a wonderful challenge in tidying up the cables, connecting them and hiding them. There’s a satisfaction that can’t be compared to many things.
If, on the other hand, you’re not into playing around with wires and cables, then you should of course have a wireless setup for your man cave. It goes without saying that a man cave should be able to play music, and that’s why wireless speakers are brilliant for you who don’t want wired speakers.

🏙 Wall storage or art?
We’ve briefly touched on the options for using your four walls in your man cave either for decoration or storage, but there’s more to it.
Some things are simply really difficult to store, so they have to go up on the wall. However, that’s not always a bad thing. Take guitars, for example: if you have more than two guitars, they will look super cool next to each other on the wall with guitar wall hangers. You can do this trick with pretty much anything, as long as it’s thought through. Sports equipment, gaming controllers and consoles, and much more can be stored in a really cool way on the walls.

🥃 The holy grail: The bar
Most people who dream of a man cave also dream of a really cool bar. For many, however, it’s a hassle to add a bar, water, etc., but that shouldn’t stop you from finding space for a bar in your man cave!
You can simply build a “dry bar”. With just a bar counter, a couple of shelves or cabinets, and a fridge, you’ll have a fully functional bar in no time and for next to no money. It’s a win-win!
It can very quickly pay off to build this type, rather than getting a plumbing bill that destroys the budget for everything else you want in your man cave.
⛔️ Be careful not to overcompensate
A very common problem that arises when you start on your man cave is that you want too much. Far too many people dream of having both the dream bar, a home cinema, a pool table and all kinds of other luxury extras.
Don’t forget that a man cave is a lifelong project. Start small and scale up gradually instead of going all in from the beginning. By keeping it simple and less cluttered, you can create more headspace, save money, and you’ll look for smarter solutions that give you more room.

💸 You don’t need to imitate the stars
You may have been inspired to build a man cave—most people are. Maybe just by a friend or someone you follow on social media. Whatever drives you, remember it’s your man cave.
It’s completely fine to be inspired by other people’s ideas, but copying someone else’s man cave 1:1 ruins the whole idea of having your own place. Also be careful about looking at famous athletes, actors or the like. You risk dreaming too big and potentially spending far too much money on your man cave to live up to an ideal that isn’t necessary at all.
Do what makes your man cave yours!
🎸 A theme is good, but not the final word
Building your man cave around a theme can be a really good idea, as it will kick-start the thought process and will definitely generate a lot of cool ideas.
It’s also generally a very popular approach to a man cave. For example, you turn your man cave into a mini sports bar with football shirts on the walls, a small bar and a table football table.
Even though themes can be great fun, our recommendation is that you don’t get too absorbed by the theme idea either. It’s completely fine to deviate from it and add plenty of personality. If you’ve got something that you don’t think fits the theme but you really like, include it anyway!
