Guide to the right headphones

Differences between different types of headphones

Wireless Bluetooth - Earbuds - In-ear - On-ear - Over-ear... These are all terms that help describe different types of headphones, and it can often be a jungle to navigate when making a purchase. This short guide can give you insight into the pros and cons of different types of headphones and help you on your next headphone purchase. Finally, there will be a brief historical review of the origin and development of the headphone.

In-ear headphones

In-ear headphones are also called earphones by many because they are small and are placed in the outer part of the ear.

Benefits: These earphones are ideal to take with you on the go because they are lightweight and compact, they can easily be connected to your phone and mp3 player, for example, and they give you a crisp, high-quality sound experience. Some models are also ideal for running and fitness. In addition, earphones are great if you don't want to risk messing up your hair or wearing a hat.

Cons: For some people, using this type of earphone is not comfortable as they feel discomfort from having it in their ear canal. Earphones provide almost no acoustic isolation, so many people compensate by turning up the music, which can lead to hearing damage. In addition, some earphones tend to fall out of the ear easily. The sound quality of in-ear headphones is not nearly as good as on-ear and over-ear headphones, and the bass response is also very poor.

Here at SoundStoreXL you will find several different models of in-ear headphones. Cell phones also use so-called headsets, which are small headphones with a built-in microphone and some buttons that can remotely control the phone. There are also wireless headsets that connect to your cell phone with Bluetooth.

On-ear headphones

This type of headphone is also called supra-aural headphones and can be closed, semi-closed or open.
These are more classic headphones where the ear cups are placed on the ear. Closed headphones isolate the sound so that the surroundings are not disturbed, while open headphones can be clearly heard by others nearby.

Benefits: On-ear headphones are often more comfortable and have a fuller sound than earbuds and in-ear headphones. They are also more portable than over-the-ear headphones, as they tend to be lighter and take up less space. There are even models that can be folded for transportation, such as the classic KOSS Porta Pro. Furthermore, the ears do not heat up as much as with over-the-ear headphones.

Cons: On-ear headphones do not have the same sound isolation as over-the-ear and in-ear headphones. Therefore, you can typically hear the outside world, but not as much as with earbuds. However, on-ear headphones tend to be uncomfortable with prolonged use due to the pressure of the ear cups on the ears. This depends a lot on the material the ear cups are made of.

Over-ear headphones

(Also called circumaural headphones or full sized headphones, and can be closed, semi-closed or open - this type is widely used for studio and DJ use).

These are more classic headphones where the ear cups are placed over the ear or around the ear. Closed headphones isolate the sound so that the surroundings are not disturbed, while open headphones can be clearly heard by others nearby.

Benefits: Over-the-ear headphones are usually the most comfortable and typically have the best sound quality. As with all headphones, sound quality and comfort depends on the brand and price. Most models have acoustic sound isolation and are typically better suited for home, studio or DJ use than for transportation (the Beats by Dre fad, or its newer rival SMS by 50 (Cent), would perhaps be the exception). When using over-the-ear headphones, you can also get surround sound that keeps the outside world out and the music in. Many models also come with a mini-Jack/Jack adapter.

Cons: Many over-the-ear headphones are typically heavy and are not ideal for taking on the go. Additionally, these types of headphones get hot on the ears quickly and tend to get tangled up in your hair.

Noise canceling headphones

Noise canceling headphones can be in-ear, on-ear or over-the-ear and have built-in noise canceling circuitry. These headphones attenuate unwanted background noise by creating "anti-noise" that cancels noise at the ear. This way you can enjoy your music without distractions.

Benefits: Due to the benefit of noise cancellation, these headphones allow you to listen to music at lower volumes, reducing the risk of hearing damage. These headphones are therefore ideal for use in noisy environments, such as air and train travel.

Cons: Many noise-cancelling headphones color the sound somewhat due to the noise-cancelling circuitry. The sound can seem a little unnatural and there is sometimes a low hum. For some people, this buzz can cause a slight discomfort in the form of dizziness and a feeling of underwater nausea. In addition, these types of headphones need to be plugged in for the noise cancellation to work, either via USB or battery ? and they use a lot of power. They are also often more expensive than more conventional headphones.

Here at DJ you will also find headphones, which, as the name suggests, are particularly used by professional DJs who want a great sound experience with really good bass. However, you don't have to be a professional musician to choose this type, as many people use them as their 'normal' headphones because they provide a great sound experience. headphones because they provide an exceptional music experience.

The history of headphones

Here's a brief history of the origin and development of the headphone.

The earphone originated from the ear cochlea, and the first successful set that would form the basis of modern headphones was produced in 1910 by Nathaniel Baldwin. The headphones were produced by hand by Baldwin himself in his own kitchen and he then sold them to the US Navy. Unfortunately for Baldwin, he never patented them.

The value of headphones was quickly recognized and development took off, with radio use being the most popular use of the headphone.

In 1937, the Beyerdynamic the market's first dynamic headphone in the DT series. This would prove to be a major step in the development of headphones. Dynamic headphones gained great popularity over time and are still the most popular type of headphones today, with the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO and DT 1990 PRO being the "icing on the cake" in terms of sound.
Since then, several major players have entered the market, including AKG, which in 1949 produced their first headphone, the K120, and quickly became wildly popular.

In 1958, however, a game-changer came when KOSS launched the first stereo headphone, the KOSS SP-3. The headphones were such a success that KOSS dominated the headphone industry in the following decades.

Since then, SONY has held much of the market, with the launch of the Walkman (1979), where everything suddenly became more portable and where earbuds, in-ear and on-ear headphones became much more popular. Not least brands such as Pioneer and Audio Technica are popular brands within headphones.

However, sales of earphones only really peaked when Apple took over the majority of the market in 2001 with the introduction of the first iPod with the characteristic white earbuds.

Headphones have become more and more of a fashion phenomenon, and Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and MONSTER Audio really established this when they introduced the Beats by Dre headphones in 2008.

Of course, what's fashionable doesn't necessarily mean it's the best sound or right for you. We hope this article has helped you on your way to buying your next set of headphones.

Hifi headphones

Here you will find 'quality steaks' for hi-fi use.
What is the definition of a hi-fi headphone, compared to a pair of headphones for dj use, or for studio use.
Well, the answer is that the hi-fi models are more for "all-round" use and general listening and playback of "normal" music.
