In this post, we'll take a closer look at sports headphones. I promise you that if you spend 5 minutes reading this post, you'll be ready to enjoy great sound in all your future workouts!

Sports and music go hand in hand, that's just the way it is. But poor sound quality and fit can quickly ruin the whole experience. In this post, I've gathered a number of different points that will equip you to make the right choice when buying new headphones!

🤔 What should you consider?

When buying new headphones, many questions may arise. Should they be wireless, are they waterproof, and much more can be part of the considerations before purchase.

Below, we have compiled various points, with things you should consider before buying

🏃🏽‍♀️💨 With or without ear hooks

An important factor in getting the most out of your new headphones is that they fit well and stay in place. It is very individual how one wants their headphones to fit, and therefore, various solutions are available.

Choosing a set of headphones with ear hooks will primarily secure the headphones by using a hook that goes over the ear. This ensures a secure fit and also ensures that the headphones cannot fall off.

If you do not want to have hooks around the ear, fortunately, there are plenty of models without them. While headphones with ear hooks hang on the ear itself, most wireless headphones without ear hooks stay in place with small "fins" that use the shape of the ear to wedge themselves in. Like with ear hooks, this solution is not for everyone, so it's important to try different options and find the one that suits you best. On some models, such as the Pioneer SE-E7BT, you can easily switch between the two if desired.

🔌 Wired or Wireless

Some models of sports headphones come with a wire, while others are wireless. Even with wireless headphones, there may still be a wire connecting the two earbuds.

Some may find this feature really convenient. Most headphones with a wire between them often have a small clip that makes it easy to attach them to clothing. Additionally, these headphones often have a remote control that makes it easy to adjust volume, play/pause music, and even include a microphone so you can answer calls without interrupting your workout.

Others, however, may find the wire annoying, and luckily for them, there are plenty of "true wireless" headphones where the wire is completely eliminated!

🔊 Frequency Range

Different tones have different frequencies. In simple terms, frequency refers to the number of vibrations the sound wave that hits the eardrum makes. The lower the number, the deeper the sound.

Typically, frequency ranges are divided as follows:

Bass: 0-800 Hz Midrange: 800-4,000 Hz Treble: 4,000 - 20,000 Hz Consider this when looking for headphones!

If you listen to bass-heavy music like hip-hop or EDM, you should consider headphones that go low in frequency (20-30 Hz). If you listen to classical music, choose headphones that excel in midrange and treble tones. If you listen to podcasts, opt for headphones that perform well between 100 and 250 Hz, where the typical human voice frequency lies

💦 IPX Rating

It's almost inevitable that your headphones will be exposed to moisture or water when you use them for sports. Therefore, it's a good idea to check if your headphones have an IPX rating.

IPX is a standard for how waterproof/water-resistant a product is. In general, higher IPX ratings indicate better protection against water and sweat.

Below is a list of IPX ratings and what they mean:

IPX0: Not protected against water
IPX1: Protected against vertically falling water drops.
IPX2: Protected against vertically falling water drops when the product has a maximum inclination of 15 degrees.
IPX3: Protected against rain.
IPX4: Protected against splashing water.
IPX5: Protected against water jets.
IPX6: Protected against powerful water jets.
IPX7: Protected against immersion in water up to 1 meter depth for up to 30 minutes.
IPX8: Protected against continuous immersion in water. The exact specifications are provided by the manufacturer.

👂 Interchangeable Ear Tips

Most in-ear headphones come with different sizes of ear tips. This is done to ensure a snug fit in the ear canal and provide the best sound reproduction. Since no two ears are the same, it's great to be able to replace the ear tips. Additionally, the detachable ear tips make it easy to wash the earbuds after use.

Do yourself a favor when you get your new headphones and try out the different sizes. You'll quickly notice that both the sound and fit change drastically when you find the size that suits you best!
